48 During the first days fighting before Nashville, when our Brigade Charged & Captured a French Battery & the first line of works, We Came very near Capturing the Rebel Gen Stewart, (Corps Commander) who mad very determined efforts to rally His men, & He only desisted from His efforts when His men had all broke in Confusion for the Rear, or threw down their arms & surrendered, & He only escaped by the fleetness of a fine Dark sorrel Horse
