269 was Coming towards us simulteous with a Horseman at full speed who shouted as He passed the Head of each Regt. the three most welcome words we have heard for 4 years (peace is Declared). a party had come through from Spanish Fort bringing the official Statement of the surrender of Lee & His army. Hence the peace rummer. there was all the modes of rejoicing from the silent thanksgiving, to the wild out burst of joy. 18 miles to day
