293 Montgomery Ala May 6" 1865 Saturday Gen Pillow an old U. S. officer of Mexican War fame, & late a Rebel Came in with His Staff officers & gave Himself up to Federal Authorities now in Montgomery. Official report of the Surrender of Dick Taylor with His Army to Canby on the same Terms as Lee to Grant, and a secession of Hostilities East of the Mississippi. The returning Soldiers of Lee & Johnson are Coming in rappidly on (Vertically, from bottom right:-) Their way Home, and they are treated worse than Strangers by the Citizens and they prefer to eat with us rather than [Citizens?]
