299 Selma Alabama May 12th 1865 Friday The former Garrison left this morning early and the 3d Brigade 1st Division 16th Corps ocupied the quarters vacated by the 13th Corps Troops. The [layout?] of there Camps are very beautifull, and are in the Suburbs of the City, near the pallisades or line of Defences, I made the acquaintance of a Mr Smith a Scotchman from Aberdeen He has been at this place & Mobile for 5 years and is one of the vetereans of the Rebellion in Their arsenals
