3 Selma Alabama May 17th.. 1865 Wedensday Relieved from Duty this morning at 9 o'clock. I find that Vegetables, Butter, Eggs, & can be bought very reasonable of the Civilians Butter 25 cts per lb, Eggs 25 cts per Doz. and Strawberries, Dew Berries, Black berries &c. 25 Cts per quart and the onely reason that the Soldiers of this Command don't live well, is because they have no money being now about 7 months without pay. Some outrages have been perpetrated on the Citizens in the sourounding Country by Reckless men of both Armies, and petty thieving is done some by our men. The [illegible] now was
