6 Selma Ala, May 20th..1865 Saturday A middle aged Colored man came into my quarters this morning having just arrived from the country showing evident signs of the most brutel Treatment His Head was bruised from Clubing & His flesh Cut open with the lash. and for no offence, but because He was free, and the Destroyed Tyrant Can do nothing but vent His hatred of the Yankees on the inofensive Blacks. and every such blow struck at the Former Slave is intended as blows at the Federal Government, which such (rest illegible)
