3 Selma Ala, June 10th,, 1865 Saturday I gave an order for 1/2 gall whiskey to make bitters for Virdin, & know that it was for that purpose only, as He is debilitated and Surgeon Underwood has no medicine. which perhaps is just as well. I was cognizant of another case. of a White Slave, a young boy, Hair white and straight, eyes blue, and Skin as fair as any Saxon. His Mother was a very light Woman and Mistress of the overseer who worked the woman as a field Hand and raised His Children to be Slaves. Another instance of the beautifull workings of this peculiar Institution,
