Tupelo Mis July 14th, 1864 Thursday Early this morning the enemy advanced and scarcely had our Brigade got in position when they attacked us in force, the 12th Iowa first receiving the shock, being the most advanced on the line & on the right of the Pontotoc Road, where the rebels threw their hea -viest force with the hope of breaking through our lines. But they were repu -lsed with terrible loss. after 3 hours desperate fight -ing we charged among them from the field in great con -fusion leaving 279 dead on the field behind them
