81 On the March in Missouri Sept 30th. 1864 Friday We marched 20 miles to day passing through the Village of Poplar Bluff or rather the wreck of one. the principle feature of which is an unfinished Court House of Brick. We Recrossed the Black River five miles from the villiage on to the East Bank at 11 oclock at night, it being the darkest night I have seen for a long time the River Coming knee deep we forded it again. I had a shake of ague to day on the march which was through the Rain in the forenoon. I Rode 4 miles when the fever was on
