To make Varnish 61 Take a quarter of a pound Gum Sandrack (the whitest you can get) beat it to a fine powder & put it into a Bottle with a flat bottom that you may be able to stir it well with a stick; add to it half a pint of the best rectified Spirits of wine, and three Ounces of Essence of Turpentine, stir the whole together untill the Sandrack is dissolved: then strain it through a piece of Linen into a bottle for use. when you use it, pour some into a Cup, and wet your brush well, but dont let it be too full of the varnish. This varnish is put on the work in the same manner as the others When your Box or Table &c is ready if there is any paper (such as prints &c) you must wash it ([printed?] paper) over with a brush with Isinglass water, made as follows; half an ounce of Isinglass dissolved over the fire in sufficient water, it must not be too thick; then give a Coat of varnish with a very large flat brush for the purpose, something of a painter brush; it must be done by the fire. let this be quite dry before you put on another coat; and so on till
