The general engagement was not expected to take place until the next day so we ware ordered to go into camp until morning. We had nothing to cover us but our blankets and it rained nearly all night so you may form Some Idea how comfortable I slept. The next moring we ware called at 3 oclock to get ready to go to battle. We dried our guns, eat our rations and had our ammunition distributed and formed in order and was awaiting orders to march forward whe we saw a Secession flag come down the Mountain and Soon the troops of the 10th Ind Regiment came shouting in, with the trophies of the Rebel camp. The 8th 10th & Pt of the 13th Ind. and the 3rd Ohio Regiments had attacted them the eveing before and had completely routed them. We could see the smoke of the battle when we went into camp but thought it only to Scouts & Pickets of each army.
