a week maybe for a month and perhaps longer, we do not know how long, The Secessionest appear to be pretty well whipped out here in Western Va. as we hear of no troops of that persuasion in those parts since we chased them over the Mountain a few days since and of which I gave you an account of in my last letter to you but we are kept on verry strict watch all the time for fear that some of them may be still hid among the mountains. of which we are not aware of. We have had verry hard times for the last 8 or 9 days as we left our tents at Buchannon when we left there and have had to Sleep in the open air ever since until last night we got them again. It rained evry day since we come into the State until day before yesterday it cleared away. We are pretty well up in the mountains consequently the weather is not verry warm but at nights it is quite cold so much so that the
