people that live here always keep fire in their houses in the evenings. The people were perfectly terror stricken when we come into the country as they had been taught to believe that the northern troops would entirely exterminate them without regard to age or sex and a great many fled to the Mountains with their famalies and stayed there until they learned that they ware safe in returning. Our General gave strict orders not to allow the soldier to visit any of the houses as we passed and One man was put under guard for 3 days for going into a garden and getting 3 onions. He is bound to show the people of Western Va that we are their friends and not their enemies. It is hard to get any thing to eat except what our regular Rations are. and men will give 25 cts for a pone of Corn bread which their dogs would not eat at home and consider it a delicacy. The Moun-
