Aug 30th. 1861 Dear Wife I am still in good health and will add a few more lines yesterday One of the Companies of our Regiment was reconnoitering the enemy and got most too close. and had 2 of their men shot 1 Killed the other wounded. Reenforcements ware sent on here last night and I beleive it is the intention for us to march on and attact them today but I am not sure as the Commanding Officers does not let such things be known. Accompaning this I send you a pair of gloves which one of Our boys found near the enemys camp in a Captains Coat pocket. and he also found Some Womens clothes. They ware all tied in a bundle and laying at the side of the road and while he was examineing them they fired on him and he had to Slape in double quick time but he held on to the gloves and gave them to me when he got back. Tell Newton I will send him some Secesh trophy as soon as I get something suitable. The pipe that is with this and the paper that is rapped around it I want you to send to McClung. I have not time to write more at present your affectionate husband, A. F. Davis
