Camp Elk Fork, Va, Sep 2/61 Mrs Sarah Davis Dear Wife Yesterday was Sunday and evrything was quiet about camp so I took a Stroll among the mountains to geather some berries and did not return until 5 Oclock P.M. and in going to the P.O. I found your welcome letter of the 25th. and had got about half through reading it when I was Ordered eat supper in a hurry and then call out the company as we had to march about 10 miles up the valley to see if we could not catch some Secesh that ware reported there. So as soon as we could eat and be ready we ware on the march and I had to finish reading as I went. We went about 8 miles and then set down by the road side and staid until nearly daylight, which by the way was the coolest night I have ever put in since I left home as we had nothing but gum blankets to put around us as we expected to march most of the night and the weather being cool and we dare not move for we ware watching for Secesh and we ware nearly all stiff with cold, and no Secesh appearing we Started on two mils further where we expected to catch them napping, but they ware not there and had not been lately so it was a water haul and all we had to do was to about face and march for camp, which made 12 miles we had to march before breakfast which by the way is a little the hardest breakfast spell I have taken lately, but when we got to camp, those that ware unable to go with us had breakfast ready so that we was all soon in a good humor At the end of our Journey up the valley and was looking around fo some
