Camp Elk Fork Va Sep 8th 1861 Mrs Sarah Davis Dear dear Wife I have just returned from Picket duty where our Company has been for the last 5 days consequently I have had no chance to write you this week and I embrace this the first spare moments to the pleasing task of addressing my beloved family. When I arrived at camp I found your kind but sad letter of the 1st inst and in reading it I had to Stop often and wipe the tears from my eyes which I was unable to controll or keep back when I read of my dear wifes sore afflictions and suffering and that is my last thought at night when I lay down and my first thought when I awake in the morning to wonder if dear Sally and the children are as well and hearty as I am but I fear they are not for my health is most excellent and I Know that yours is not, but I sincerely hope ere I read your letter that you was much better again. But I fear that Sally has not broke herself of One grave fault if she is Sick nearly all the time and that is she will Work too Hard whether she is sick or well. B .F Miller Started home yesterday morning but I had not saw him for Several days consequently I did not send any late news by him. I sent a Small package containing Some few notions and a letter which no doubt you will
