just let me here remark that that was the time to show who was going to flinch and I am sorry to say that 2 men in Co J. was suddenly taken sick One of them you do not know but the other is a native of Liberty and has always been spoken of as being verry brave and we succeeded in bullyragging him out of the notion but the other set down by a tree and set there. The rest of us pulled off our haversacks and gum blankets and some their coats and piled them in the fence corner and announced ourselves ready. We ware then Ordered to move along the side of the mountain on the opposite side of the valley from them until we got fairly in front and then make the charge. We then marched to the position just named and ware forming as best we could in the bushes and ware awaiting the order to make the charge when we ware ordered to countermarch, or turn back. We turned around and marched a few Steps and Set down to rest. and I will here say that all the time we ware in that position that the cannon Shot ware falling thick and fast all around above and below us but by good luck or the providence of God none of our Regiment ware hurt but many of them done some good dodging (but the dodge was always too late.) Up to this time the cannon on our side was pouring in the shot incessantly but now they entirely ceased and we ware ordered back to where we first Started from and then we ware told that the enemy had just received large reenforcements and what was worst of all our cannons had entirely run out of Ammunition so our forces withdrew in good order and left them masters of the
