field but from all appearances they ware badly used up as our cannon had thrown 2200 shot and shells into their camp and had succeeded in silencing 2 of their batterries before our ammunition gav out and often the shells ware seen to fall in their trenches where their men ware the thickest consequently there must have been a great many of them Killed and wounded. Our loss consisted of 10 Killed and 12 wounded. We Killed 13 of their men whom we found in driving in their out posts and our men say they Killed many more but the 13 we Know of sure. We also captured 15 prisoners. The battle lasted lasted just 3 hours and no doubt if we had had ammunition that before night we would have driven them out for no amount of men could have Stood such deadly fire for many hours when they ware doing no damage in return. Our Cannon Stood in plain view of their works all the time and they only succeeded in Killing 1 and wounding 4 of the artillerymen and broke the axiltree of One piece but not so bad but they took it away. At 12 Oclock precisely we started back to camp and after we had got started I took a very violent headache and got in a waggon and rode 2 miles then walked the rest of the way making 22 miles travel besides the excitement and by the time I got back to our camp I was very tired. I can now say that I have been where the bullets ware flying in good earnest. This morning at 8 Oclock we started for our old Camp and had got 4 miles on our way when a messenger overtook us and ordered us to turn back as the enemy ware comeing on to the the camp we had just left; so we turned back
