left the comforts of home and come forward and offered their Servises and their lives if need be in defense of their country. and not with the prospect of Office or any thing of the kind, while beastly sots whose patriotism would never have shown itself had they thought that they would have had to served in the Capasity of privates. I think we owe more to General Alcohol than to any one els for our many disgraceful defeats and our slow progress. in the prosecution of the war, but enough of this for the subject is painful for any one to think of, There has been a great amount of rain here within the last two weeks. with some sleet and snow. consequently our camp has become verry muddy, but is getting some better within the last two days as it has not rained within that time and the soil is of such a nature that it soon dries up. We received orders 2 days since to be ready to march at a minutes notice but are not gone yet and may not go for a week to come. As near as I can find out we are going forward about 12 miles to find a better Camping ground as the Drs. think a change of locality will be better for the health of the men We have been looking verry anctiously for the pay master for some time but he dont come, but no doubt he will be along before many days, and I hope he will for I have either spent or lent all my loose change except one dollar and fifty cents but I will try and make that do me until he does come. I presume that Our old friend, Hat Shanklin (Alias,) Kingery is going to become a citizen of Liberty. I hope you will find her as agreeable as in former times. I cant think of anything els to write to night so I will put the job off until morning and perhapse I can think of Something to fill up the other page before the mail starts. Jan 23rd It is morning and I will try and finish this before the mail Starts. The weather is cloudy and raw but not verry cold. It seems odd to me when I think of it that the winter is more than half gone and as yet I have not saw snow enough to track a rabbit. Why is it that Mother or Newton never writes to me I think they might send me a few lines by way of Compliment if nothing. I hear that Elihu Macy is sick and sent back to
