battle here soon but as yet it has not taken place although it may commence at any hour and I would not be surprised to be called up and put on the march before morning and then again it may be 2 weeks or more and sometimes it is thought by many that there will be no battle at all, as it may be that they will get up and Skedaddle and leave us their empty fortifications as the fruits or Our Victory. There is great movements going on here and has been ever since the Battle of Shiloh but what these movements are none but few know, but time will no doubt soon disclose the designs of Our Generals. There is no doubt but what there is as yet a great amount of troops at Corinth as Our forces and them are skirmishing evry day and we can hear the cars runing very busily all the time. We have been gradualally moveing on towards them for some time and Our lines are now within 4 miles of the enemy Our camp is within 5 miles of the town and evry day is gradually bringing us nearer. Last night Our Company was on picket I was the only officer with them, We lay all night so near the enemy that we could hear their music. and our Cavalry was Skirmishing with them all night within about 600 yards of us. and there was not a half hour during the night but what they ware fireing at each other, There has not been a day for the last week but what there is cannon fighting somewhere on the lines. and as I am now writing the Booming of the artillery is sounding on the left of our lines .but it is such a common thing that it attracts but little attention with us, but I presume that before many days. we will all pay attention to it. I saw a Cincinnati paper of the 9th Inst today which is the latest news I have seen. By that I see that McClelland is doing good Service in eastern Virginia and it is rumored in Camp
