Louisville Ky. Sept. 26th 1862 Mrs. Sarah Davis My dear wife With a Sad heart I now endeaver to address you We arrived here last night at Midnight and today I got your letter of the 23rd and Oh the feelings it caused me when I read of your Sickness and afflictions. It had been a long time since I had heard from you and I hoped when I did hear from you I would have good news but Sad was my disappointment. When I was at Bowling Green I wrote you a short letter but you say nothing about it in yours therefore I infer that you never received it. I am happy to Say that I am in excellent health but somewhat weary and most exceedingly dirty and when I tell you that for the last 32 days we have marched 27 and I have only slept in a tent 3 nights out of that time and for the last 15 days I have not even changed clothes not even Shirt or Socks and have marched from 15 to 36 miles evry 24 hours through dust Shoe mouth deep, therefore I think I have a right to claim being both weary and dirty. Buell and Bragg has been running a race to See who would beat to Louisville. About the first of this Month Bragg Started from Pikesville Tenn. towards this point and the 3rd of the month our part of Buells Army Started from McMinnville, and Kept paralelle with Bragg and about 20 miles to his left watching him closely all the way. We pushed on
