Samuel Miller from Monticello White Co who was at one time a Captain in this Regt. but resigned some months ago to keep from being cashiered and who was a candidate for the nomination on the Democratic ticket of his district for State Senator last fall, came to this Regiment afew days since and called on his old company and former friends and soon got the political question started and then let himself loose. He said this was nothing more than an abolition war made for speculation and the officers were stealing and the privates were stealing and that the people were tired of paying taxes and that the North West was going to Secede and start a confederacy of their own and used the language We are strong enough and We are going to do it. This language was rather plain and the consequence was that he was called upon to pay a visit to Gen. Rosecrans and he is now in limbo with a fare prospect of a visit to Ft. LaFayette. If the soldiers had their way he would be hunk as high as Haman and the men of his old Company would willing help pull the rope. He dressed in soldier's clothes and come through from Nashville with one of our trains telling the commander of the train that he belonged to a Regt. here. The Rebs of Indiana will soon find out that they have no sympathisers among the Hoosiers with blue coats and brass buttons. It makes one sick to hear how matters are going in Indiana. You want me to resign All I have to say is not just now for if ever my services were needed by my country it is now I would be ashamed to show myself a Citizen in Indiana just at this present crisis but am proud to say I am a soldier but of late am almost ashamed to own that I am from Indiana. I want to visit my family and intend to do so as soon as I can but not by resigning. There is one thing you mention in one of your letters which surprised me very much
