H'd Qrs 7" Iowa Vol Inft In The Field Near Atlanta Ga. Aug 3d. 64 My dear wife, I mailed a long letter to you on Sunday last. I am not busy to-day I conclude to write you again as I have to write just as I can catch the time. I received the plain dealer of the 22d ult. by yesterdays mail Expected a letter but it did not come. we not have advanced any Since I wrote you last but the Regiment has been engaged all the time building fortifications & getting ready for The final struggle. The enemy opend on us on The morning of the 31st of July with 84# Shells Several of Them have burst near our Regiment but as yet we have Sustained no Injury from them The men in the front line have Strong works and Trenches to git into for protection & we at H'd Qrs. which is when in camp about 50 yards in the rear have piles of Logs and Holes dug behind them to protect us during the night. for there is no telling
