Sunday, June 1st) Dear friends at home, We are encamped a mile and a half east of Redriver The County seat of this County is Searcy. it is 4 miles west of here there is none of our troops camped on that side of the river this river is a little larger than the Nishany, (I don't know how to spell the name of that river I have lived near so long) Searcy is a bout the size of Hamburg but is a much prettier place: Batesvill is 40 miles from here on White river it is the Countyseat of Independence Co. we passed through it two weeks ago Gen. Curtis makes that place his Headquarters yet allthough the most of his army is near here. from what I can learn he has a bout 15 000 fighting men here now he sent two Regiments of Infantry to Cape Garrideau this place is some whare on the Miss River. they were Commanded by Gen Davis of Ind. they started from Batesvill a bout two weeks ago, We are 65 miles from Little Rock we have been here 8 days our Army is not advanceing northward
