Dry Bend March the 9 1863 Dear Brother John I will try to write you a few lines in reply to yours of Feb. the 9 which came to hand on the 7 it had been a long time on the road I had wrote to you a few days before I received yours There has been a goodeal of sickness in this County this winter and a great many deaths and among the rest Samuel. Huff. he died on last Saturday morning about half past five Oclock he suffered verry much in his last sickness he was sick about fifteen or twenty days His funeral was preached yesterday by Oneal March the 11 Ther was a secesh here the other night when I was a writing he and Father got to arguing and I had to stop writing and listen to them he was the bigest fool that I ever have seen he went so far as to say that the North fired the first gun. Father told him that he was a secesh and that he ought to be made go south and help them fight Alsworth's School is out this week Susan and Wes has learned verry fast this winter you wanted to know some thing a bout your farm
