Camp near Vicksburg May the 29th /63 Father Amidts the roar of canon the screaming of shell and the sharp whisl of musket ball I set me down to drop you a line to let you know that we are still on the land of the living - this is the 10th day that we have been fiting at this place - there has been no hard fiting since the 4th day - the rebbles have all been driven within their forts our troops are closing on them fortifing as they go - it is imposiable to storm their works and the place can only be taken by a regular siege - our lines are complete all round the place and nothing can escape how long they will hold out I can not tell - but one thing is certain unless a very heavy forse is brought in our rear we can stay here as long as we Chose we recieved abundence of suplys from the river above town - the country over which we are fiting is just luck as lies between your house and Austin - every hill is strongly fortified as to what we have been doing since we crossed the river I supose you have learned from the papers - I cannot give you my idea of our loss
