Camp of the 4th Iowa Cavl Clear Creek Miss June 28th/63 Father It becomes my painfull duty to communicate to you the sad inteligence that Brother John is nomore - he was killed in an engagement with the enemy on the 22nd he fell like a soldier at his post we brought his body off the battle field and Buried it in a Church yard we made a box in which we laid it alltho it rough yet it was the best we could do - and better than many other git - greately do I miss him - yet I have and you may have the consolation to know that he lived while in the army not only a good soldier - but a devoted Christian - I have not seen any person that saw him fall but from the nature of the wound it must have produced instant Death the ball took effect in the head the particulars of the fight are about these one hundred and fifteen of our men were sent to blocade a road - while at work was attacked by six hundred rebbles after an hours fiting wer overpowered our loss was 7 killed 7 wounded 16 missing
