Camp 4th Iowa Cav Vicksburg Miss Oct 15 1863 Sister Susie I will write you a few lines before starting on a long scout. it is now 4 oclock in the morning we are to start in a half hour we are to be gone 9 days. I received those nice presents you and Mother sent me I am very much obliged to you for so remembering the Soldier boy. Wm. returned yesterday he is going on the scout with us our boys that wer captured last June returned yesterday they wer all well and look very well I will write to Abner when I return, if so permitted, breakfast is ready I must eat and go. give my love to Mother and Father and all the family Your affectionate brother A Mann
