862472 Alleghany City, August 22nd. 1862 My dear friend Martha I must acknowledge I have neglected writing to you perhaps you think I have forgotten you, well I have not. I have thought of writing to you for some time but did not get writing. the war fever is raging here. all the men and boys think about is going to war so of course the females think considerable about it too - my youngest brother has enlisted so I can tell you I feel lonesome but as thousands have gone and are going I think he has as much right to go as another. Since last I wrote to you many have gone to their long homes. many a noble fellow has fallen
