Head Quarters Military Prison Keokuk Ia Nov 3rd 4.PM 1863 Dear Ellen Night before last my heart was mad glad again by the reception on my part of a tinny messenger in the form of an un sealed letter from an absent loved one. Those little missives are indeed hapyfying to me - With out them I dont know how I could get along. I hope you will remember & have them come often I was astonished to find a letter from you un sealed. I charge you to be mor particular in the future. It found me on the gaining hand. I am doing pretty well now, though I am troubled with my head & a pain in my face. The Doctor that has been doctoring me since I came to the Guard House & have been sick, says I will not be fit for field duty for some time not before summer on account of my being so easily affected by a change of weather & exposure
