Marengo Iowa Dec 6th. 1863 Sabbath Afternoon Dear Brother Jim I came up to Mrs. Talbotts to-day & found Ellen quite poorly with a sore throat her throat is swelled so that she has not been able to eat anything for a couple of days, consequently she is too weak & nervous to write, & she requested me to answer your letter which she received to-day. The rest of the folks up here are well. It seems very lonesome here without Mr Talbott. Jefferson Talbott & Charley Baumer were here this forenoon.
