At Home Dec 13th 1863 You can hardly imagine my surprise when I recd. your letter of the 8th stating that you had had no word from home but I suppose you have recd them ere this with the answer to mine stating the reasons of my not writing. I am tolerably well now although I had quite a serious time. my throat was badly cankered before I was aware of it, but it is well now. I was quite sick for several days and have just got so I can go out again I presume Addie told you about John Hale's being badly scalded he is getting some better
