July 17 Sunday Wind dead ahead fog early in the morning afterwards fine & bright. Lat de 47[degrees].13 N. Long de 49[degrees].52 W distance run 232 ms course S. by W Cape Race 5.75' W. 134 miles The temperature of the water this morning was 44[degrees] the lowest as yet. air 46[degrees] in the evening Morning service held at 10.30 A.M. The way the Americans mix their food together is most astonishing. An American girl opposite me to-day at lunch began with a plate of rice which plate was never changed during the following successions, first she put a sardine into it, eating it with the rice. then stewed plums, a few of which she eat with the rice & upon
