The theoretical ideas of equality are carried out here to a much greater extent than I had expected. Your porter & shoe black comes & sits by your side & you talk familiarly to him, The Hotel officials call you friend in fact it is almost impossible to tell them from visitors they dont have any official look about them, they generaly dont wear hats & this is pretty nearly the only distinction. One of the porters here was in E. Virginia at the time of the outbreak of the war & he volunteered for 3 years & was with the army of the Potomac he got back in June he says he longs to see peace & talks in a very different tone to most civilians I have spoken to
