very disagreeable on account of the wood-ashes; We crossed the frontier line a short distance from Island Pond, it is merely a straight line cleared through the forest & when all the forest is cleared it is difficult to tell how they will mark the frontier line soon after passing the frontier we came to the St. Francis River & a lumber depot & the country was more cleared & cultivated. this is contrary to what we are generally told of the far greater amount of energy displayed on the American than on the British side of the frontier. But the houses of these French Canadians are not nearly so neat or large as the Americans houses
