not very high at least not the highest we had seen; the water was glassy as a mirror having that peculiar polished appearance most people have seen. when the sun was about twice or 3 times it own height from the hill tops no reflection was to be seen on the water but a single pillar of sun quite solid exactly the same breadth as the sun's diameter & no reflection beyond it. I can only draw a plan of it although it seems almost wrong to do so to give any idea of the effect.(Sketch at left). The column diminished in length is the sun went down but was about 4 times its diameter in length
