down at a great rate, the pool below seems to be still almost the explanation is that there is an under-the-rock passage through which the water makes its way. Above are beautiful islands & banks covered with trees & the trees here are much finer than in the White Mountains & about the rapids [may?] be seen logs carried off the rafts & scattered about over the rocks. In order to pass these falls in rafts slides are made at the sides of them, they are inclined planes of wood over which the water flows quickly & smoothly & the descent can be made without danger at this point there are 4 slides successively.
