The Democratic orators were addressing the people from the State & I listened to them for some time, it does seem to me their speaches were of the worst kind mere speeches of demagogues trying to influence the people & caring not what blaguard names they called their opponents, as an instance I heard the following as near as I can give it. "When the rebels were 6 miles from Washington I know it as a fact that Secretary Stanton was in such a fright that he disguised himself and took to blacking boot in the Hotel ---- at Washington, I know he done it" There was plenty of order & the crowd were much more quiet than an
