However when the speaker was talking about bringing the South back by peaceable means one cried out "supposing they wont come back." he was surrounded at once by 4 or 5 policeman & the orator rales at him and calls him a black republican there was a movement of the crowd torward him but nothing was done. Mc'lellan was nominated that morning. Sep 1st Chicago is a pleasant lively city & has not got that dull gault look I have noticed in Cleveland & Buffalo, the stores are much better & the streets are lively. A canal runs nearly round the town at the back & the lake is the other
