house of an acquaintance of our friend drove in by team to St Pauls. Distance from Dubuque to St Pauls 373 miles. The river has never been known to be so low within the memory of man & generally the boats we started in would have gone right up the river It is curious how unwilling officials seem to give information. The clerk on board said he could give me no idea how long it would take to get up to St Pauls. I think the finest scenery is from Dubuque to La Crosse. St Pauls Capital of Minnesota seems to be a very flourishing place a great many new stone buildings are being put up there. The town is built on a rock &
