Went str on by rail from La Crosse in a sleeping car. The berths a two abreast & in tiers of 2 curtains are drawn outside them & the ordinary walk goes the whole length of the car, this car was really excellently ventilated & not stuffy but the motion was rather severe. arrived at Milwaukee at 9 A.M. on the 15th Milwaukee seems a flourishing place, many of the streets are being raised (although it does not stand as low as Chicago) & we saw the operation going on in one street. the houses had been or were being raised about 6 feet, first they are under mined & then stand on wood logs then large screw are inserted & the house stands
