nearly all night in a thick fog Stopped to wood 4 miles below the Sault, this time on the U.S. side. There was no village much here like on the opposite sides, but a large carpenter's shop & a boat building place, arrived at Detour about 4 P.M. the wind blowing pretty hard we expected to have to lay up here however we got under weigh again in about an hour. a good deal of sea & not so many people as usual at supper. Oct 2nd. There is a great change in the atmosphere it being quite close and warm. I think this is owing to our having got out of Lake Superior. I don't believe there is any real
