arrived in New York about noon. Oct 6th It was thick & rainy so I did not see much of the river but I am sure from what I did see that it is very beautiful. I had to pay 2$ the regular fare for coming up in a public carriage to the 5th Avenue Hotel. at the junction of 5th Avenue & Broadway cars run along the principal avenues for 5 cents & busses down Broadway for 8 cents. the whole length of N.Y. Manhattan Island is 10 miles breadth about 2 1/2. formed by a delta of the Hudson, opposite on one side is New Jersey where there is English property & the Cunard start from here the other side is Brooklyn.
