19" 20 & 21st.. at Bentonville on their own Ground whiped them & pursued them across the Neuse River, the Enemy left the field on the night of the 21st. leaving their dead & wounded in our possession. I cannot give you the particulers of the Battle as I do not Know them myself the 14" Corps Lost in Killed wounded & missing about 800 men do not Know the Loss of any of the other Corps,
The Enemy Left in the direction of the Capital of the State & it is probable that will be their next stopping place
I will write you again in a fiew days & try & do better hope I will have more time then we have not Recd a mail yet are expecting one soon the Cars are Running from New Bern to this place distance forty five miles and the R. R from Wilmington will be in running order in a fiew days. I must Close please excuse Haste & write often to Your
