it was on fire and by morning thirty six of the finest blocks Including many Stores filled with fine Stocks of goods, was burned to the ground. the fire continued until the 20th.., by that time almost all of the City was in ashes. Our Regiment was not engaged in a real battle during the Campaign but done its share of Skirmishing & fatigue duty, On the 19 20 & 21" our forces encountered the Combine forces of Bragg Hardee Johnson & Fitz.Hugh. Lee. near Bentonville, Drove them from there lines of heavy works (on Chosen Ground) across the Neuse River, they leaving their dead & wounded in our possession, Genl Sherman, then issued his Congratulatory Order, stating that the Army would move to its base Rest draw Clothing & Rations preparatory to another Campaign, we left the battle field near Bentonville on the 23d.. & arrived here the afternoon of the 25" and will probably remain here until the 15" of April. the 7th.. Is in Camp one mile East of town on the New Bern R.R. the Road is in good order, thire is from Eight to ten trains pass up pr day. Loaded with Army Stores, and about the same number pass down to New Bern, Loaded with Reffugees and Discharged Soldiers. our Camp is within twenty yoards of the Road and it is quite Business like to have the Cares passing We are now drawing full Rations
