H'd.. Qrs" 7th.. Iowa V. V. Inft Camp 2 miles West of Petersburg Virginia May 8th.. 1865. My dear Wife We arrived here yesterday noon after a hard march of eight days. from Raleigh N.C. and will resume our march tomorrow for Richmond & thence to Alexandra, where the 15" & 17" Corps will probably remainn a week or two prepatory to a Grand Review in Washington. it is believed by all that we will then be sent to our respective States & mustered out, which I hope will be the Case, for I assure you I am tired of soldiering, and now that the Goverment does not need our services any longer I think it best to send us home, there will no doubt be a large Regular Army organized and perhaps an Army sent to Mexico, but I do not love the Service well enough to engage in either of them, unless I am held to serve out my term of three years, which is not probable
