Queen City Adams Co Iowa March 16th 1865 Dear Husband I wrote last Tuesday to you -1 do not remember what I wrote, only that we had lost our Mother, she lay in the same corner of the house that the bed stood in but cold o so cold was that dear form. I will try to give you the full particulars as near as possible. Three weeks age tomorrow on Wednesday Mary came over to Quincy to help me make my dress, she said that Mother was not very well, but still I do not think that they thought her in imminent danger & I don't think Mother thought that she was so near her last dayes. Wills came over friday & oweing to the inclemency of the weather he did not go back untill Sunday, that night which was the [26th] of Feb Thomas Lawrence died & was buried on Tuesday, the next day, the first day of March. Wills came over after Mary brought the horse & saddle - it was very cold & Mary had a chance to ride in a wagon & Wills rode Jim back. Mother would not give up to have the Doc untill the day before Mary came home, she said that it was no use to take medicine. I did not hear any thing from her & thought she was better. Father went up to the office Saturday night by no news came that night, Sunday morning while I was down helping to milck Ellis came over. [I] knew then that Mother
