Iowa City July 26th 1863 T.C. Durant Esq. Dear Sir Yours of the 21st is received - I will have the right of way maps ready for the first twelve miles west of Grinnell next week - I can not attend to the right of way as I am very busy not being able to obtain any Engineering assistance of much value - Mr Shotwell the only Assistant I have getting but forty Dollars per month. I think I could get one man, Mr House at seventy five, Mr Henry does not feel at liberty to increase the pay - I will try and have the balance to Skunk River ready before long - The papers and maps of what I considered the Pacific route to the Salt Lake Valley I sent to Mr Farnam not having an opportunity to make copies - My idea being this to cross the Missouri below Omaha - follow the North side of the Platte River
