Engineers Office Union Pacific Rail Road Omaha December 7th 1864 Hon John A. Dix Dear Sir I hereby tender you my resignation of the position of Chief Engineer of the Union Pacific Rail Road to take effect on the thirtieth of December, one year from the date of my appointment. I am induced to delay until that time, that I may combine the results of the Surveys of this year, and present them to the company, in to myself, a satisfactory manner. My reasons for this step, are simply that I do not approve of the contract, made with Mr Hoxie for building the first hundred mmiles from Omaha west, and I do not care to have my name so connected with the Rail Road, that I shall appear to indorse this contract. Wishing for the Road success beyond the expectations of its managers I am Respectfully Yours Peter A. Dey
