Washington Aug.t 13. 1856 Durant Nothing was done to day in the House about the R.R. Bill -- the outside rascals, and the inside thieves are playing all sorts of sculdugery and it keeps me busy all the time threatning and heading them off -- I cannot explain the various dodgers in a letter, but will when we meet -- It is now 11. o.c P.M -- I have just returned from the grand council where it was agreed to try + get it through the House if possible before the adjournment, and let it sleep in the Senate until next session when Douglass agrees to make it right and put it through -- I have not telegraphed you for the reason that it was too late for you to do any good here, and nothing has transpired worthy
